HHR Steam Engines Section
August Bank Holiday, Sunday & Monday
The Honiton Hill Rally steam section has grown in size and popularity, since the 1970’s HHR’s gates have seen a wide range of magnificent engines. We have a loyal band of followers who come to our rally as often as possible come rain or shine! Over the last 30 years we have had engines from far and wide, ranging from as close as Chard to as far away as New Zealand when the Burrell engines came home for a tour! Most years we see fine examples of Burrell, Fowler, Aveling & Porter, Marshall, Sentinel, Ruston & Procter & Garrett Engines to name but a few, some beautifully restored and others we call “in their working coats”!
More recently we have separated the miniature and full size steam into two separate sections to make them more manageable!, this has helped us concentrate on building the section, we have also seen steam cars and even a steam motorbike grace our fields which has added another dimension to the steam section bringing steam and motor enthusiasts closer together. We also try were possible to incorporate the working section with saw-benches and threshing equipment driven by steam, the unmistakeable smell of coal, oil and steam greeting you as you enter the site creating the Rally atmosphere.
I myself as section leader have a fascination with steam, the giants from a bygone age working beautifully, the shining brass of a showmans engine, hard working portables, tractors & rollers to the mighty ploughing engines all well represented at HHR. I would also encourage you to talk to the owners & drivers, they all love their engines, and would be happy to talk to you and answer any questions, some of our engines have quite a story to tell, hard working lives, conversions, accidents, and many thankfully being saved from scrap to be preserved for our enjoyment.
